Scan to PDF, without the upload.

Turn photos of paper into straight, clean PDF pages. It finds the paper, flattens the angle, evens out the light and saves one page for each photo. Contracts, payslips and ID scans stay on your device.

How to scan a document to PDF

  1. Add your photos

Choose pictures, or take one with your camera. One photo is one page.

  2. Check the corners

The paper is found for you. Drag a corner if it missed, or use the whole photo.

  3. Download the PDF

Press Make PDF. Pages are straightened and cleaned, then saved in one file.

What stays and what doesn't

The pages are rebuilt from your photos. These are the things that do not come along to the PDF:

When it won't run

Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because scanning them would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.

  • A whole number of pixels from 1 to 16383.
  • The PDF stores its colours as CMYK. This tool can't change it without altering the colours.
  • The PDF stores 16 bits per colour. This tool works in 8 bits and would flatten it, so it leaves the file alone.
  • The PDF is an animation. This tool would keep only the first frame, so it leaves the file alone.

Scanning to PDF: what to expect

The tool looks for the four corners of the paper, flattens the page as if you had held the camera straight above it, and evens out the light so a shadow or a gradient fades. If it cannot see the paper, for white paper on a white table, it says so and uses the whole photo until you drag the corners onto the paper.

Choose how the pages are cleaned: automatic keeps colour only where the page has some, colour, gray, or black and white for text, which is stored at one bit a pixel and is small. Original only straightens. Pages are saved at the resolution you pick, never more than the photo holds, on A4, Letter, or the shape of the paper.

The camera is used only if you press its button, and it stops the moment you take the photo, close it, or leave the page. Nothing is recorded and no photo is sent anywhere. The text on the pages is a picture: to search it, use OCR PDF on the result.

Questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Do I need a scanner?

No. A phone camera is enough, and so is a photo from your gallery.

What if the paper is not found?

Drag the four corners onto it. A page that is white on a white table is hard for any program, so the corners are always yours to set.

Is the camera used all the time?

No. Only after you press the camera button, and it stops when you take the photo, close it or leave the page.

Is the text searchable?

Not yet. The pages are pictures. Use OCR PDF on the result to make them searchable.

How is this different from images to PDF?

Images to PDF puts pictures in a file as they are. Scan to PDF straightens, crops to the paper and cleans each page first.
