How to fill in a PDF form
Add your PDF
Drop it above or choose it. The pages open with the fields ready to type in.
Fill it in
Click a field and type. On a phone, tap a field and type in the bar at the foot. A PDF with no fields opens on text and ticks: click where they should go.
Save the filled copy
Press Save. Switch on Make it final first if the answers should become part of the page.
What stays and what doesn't
The filled copy keeps the form fillable unless you make it final. These do not come along:
A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.
Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.
When it won't run
Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because filling it in would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.
- The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Filling it in would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
- A whole number of pixels from 1 to 16383.
- That text can't be drawn with the font we have. Use Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters.
- The PDF is an XFA form, and this tool can't fill those. Nothing was changed.
- The pages are already in that order. Your file is unchanged.
Filling in a PDF form: what to expect
Only the fields you change are touched. Every other field keeps the look the form gave it. A text field gets a new look drawn in Helvetica, or in Arimo when the text needs it: accented Latin, Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic letters are drawn. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and right to left scripts are not, and the tool names the first character it cannot draw before it saves, never a question mark in its place.
Make it final runs the same code as Flatten PDF on the filled file, so the result is the file you would get by filling first and flattening after. The answers stay on the page and the fields go.
A form built on XFA that also has ordinary fields is filled through the ordinary fields, and its XFA part is removed, because a viewer would otherwise show the XFA form and ignore your answers. A form that is XFA only has no fields this tool can fill, and it says so.
A signed form is held back until you agree to drop the signature. Filling a signed file breaks the signature, and the copy would not carry it. This tool types answers: it does not add a signature to the page, and Sign PDF is the one that does.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Can I fill a PDF that has no fields?
Yes. Choose Text, Check or Cross, then click the page where it should go. Add today's date with one button.
Will the form stay fillable?
Yes, unless you switch on Make it final. Then the answers are flattened into the page, as Flatten PDF does it.
Which letters can it write?
Latin with accents, Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and right to left scripts cannot be drawn yet. The field says which character is the problem.
What happens to a signature in the form?
A signed file is held back. If you agree, the signature is dropped and the filled copy says so. Fields that are only waiting for a signature stay empty.
Why can't it fill my form?
A form that is XFA only has no ordinary fields. The tool says so and writes nothing.
