How to add a watermark to a PDF

  1. Add your PDF

Drop it above or choose it.

  2. Type your text

One line, like CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT. Pick the position, the size and how strong it looks.

  3. Add it and download

Save the stamped file. The text becomes part of the pages and this tool cannot take it off, so keep your original.

What stays and what doesn't

The text is drawn on top of each page and becomes part of it. Nothing else changes, apart from a PDF/A mark and fast web view, which the result line names when your file had them.

A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.

Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.

When it won't run

Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because watermarking it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.

  • The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Watermarking it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
  • Those settings can't be used. Pick them again.
  • That text can't be drawn with the font we have. Use Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters.

Adding a watermark: what to expect

This tool adds a watermark and never removes one. The text you type is drawn on top of every page's own content, in grey, and from then on it is part of the page. This tool cannot take it off again, and a watermark that was already in the PDF is neither removed nor hidden by it. Keep your original if you may need the clean file.

Choose where it goes: slanted across the page, in the middle, or along the bottom. Choose small, medium or large; the size follows the short side of the page, and a line that would not fit is made smaller, never cut off. Opacity runs from 5% to 100%. A light mark leaves the page readable, a solid one hides what is under it.

Write one line of 64 or fewer letters, digits and marks. Latin letters, including Vietnamese, Cyrillic and Greek work. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and Devanagari are refused, and the sentence names the letter that stopped it, because drawing a question mark in its place would be worse. The new file is named after the original with -watermarked added.

Questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Can this remove a watermark?

No. It only adds one. A watermark that is already in a PDF stays where it is, and the one you add cannot be taken off again by this tool.

Can I use my logo or a picture?

Not here. This page takes a line of text.

Which scripts can I type?

Latin letters with their accents, Vietnamese included, Cyrillic and Greek. Other scripts are refused with the letter that stopped the run, instead of being drawn as question marks.

Will it show when the PDF is printed?

Yes. It is part of the page like any other text. A low opacity prints lighter.
