How to merge PDFs
Add your PDFs
Drop them above or choose them. Pictures belong to JPG to PDF.
Set the order
Drag the handle or use the arrows. The first file's bookmarks and form fields are kept.
Merge and download
Press Merge PDFs. Save the one file it makes.
What stays and what doesn't
The first file is the base of the result, so it arrives whole. The files after it add their pages, and these are the things that stay behind with them:
- the password
- the PDF/A mark
- XFA form data
- bookmarks
- named destinations
- links to pages that are not in the result
- page labels
- form fields (they stay on the page but can no longer be filled in)
- reading-order tags used by screen readers
- attached files
- scripts
- extra properties
A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.
Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.
When it won't run
Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because merging it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.
- The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Merging it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
Merging PDFs: what to expect
The first file in the list is the base of the result. It keeps its own bookmarks, named destinations, form fields, reading-order tags, attached files and properties, because the merged file is that file with more pages added to the end. Pages from the other files arrive with their text, their pictures and the links between their own pages.
Order matters, so set it before you press Merge PDFs: drag a row by its handle, or use the arrows beside it. The result is named after the first file with -merged added, and the files you added are never changed. A file that cannot be read, or that needs something from you first, is held on its own row, and the row says what it needs.
The work happens in your device's memory, so the limit is your device's, not ours. A merge takes up to 100 files and up to 300 MB of PDFs together on a computer; a phone has less memory, so the limit there is lower. A merge that is too big says so and changes nothing.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Which file's bookmarks and forms are kept?
The first file's. It is kept as it is, with its bookmarks, named destinations, form fields, tags, attached files and properties. Pages from later files arrive with their content and links between their own pages; their bookmarks, forms and properties are not carried over, and the row says which were left behind.
Can I merge pictures too?
Not here. This page takes PDFs. Put pictures in a PDF with JPG to PDF (or PNG to PDF), then merge the results.
What if a PDF has a password or a signature?
A PDF that needs a password asks for it on its own row. A digitally signed PDF is held back, because merging breaks the signature; you can continue without the signature, which is then removed. A PDF that opens but forbids editing asks before its limits are removed.
How many files can I merge?
Up to 100, and together up to 300 MB on a computer. A phone has less memory, so the limit is lower there.
