How to compare two PDFs

  1. Add two PDFs

Drop the older file and the newer file above.

  2. Read the differences

Changes are marked page by page. Switch between the words, the pages and the difference.

  3. Save the report

Download the differences as a web page you can keep or send.

What stays and what doesn't

Comparing writes no PDF. The report is a separate page:

When it won't run

Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because comparing them would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.

Comparing two PDFs: what to expect

The words view lines up the pages of the two files by what they say, so a page added at the front does not push every other page out of step. Words that were added are underlined, words that were removed are struck through, and a passage that only changed place is boxed as moved.

The pages view puts both files on one picture with a divider, and the difference view marks the pixels that differ and draws a box round each changed word. It works for scans and for files without text, where the words view has nothing to compare.

Text is read in column order. A table, or a page with a picture in the middle of the text, can be read in a different order than you would read it, in both files alike. The report shows what the files contain, as a guide to where to look.

Questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Can it compare scans?

The pages and difference views can. The words view needs files that contain text, and it says so when they do not.

Does it show moved text?

Yes. A passage of several words that only changed place is marked as moved, not as removed and added.

What if a page was added or taken out?

Pages are matched by what they say, not by number, so the pages after it still line up. A page with no partner is listed on its own.

Can I ignore capital letters or punctuation?

Yes. Both can be switched off as differences, and the result updates without reading the files again.

Are the files uploaded?

No. Both files are read in your browser.
