How to add page numbers to a PDF
Add your PDF
Drop it above or choose it.
Choose how the numbers look
Pick a style, one of six places on the small page, and the first number. The line under the controls shows what page 1 will say.
Add the numbers and download
Save the numbered file. Your original stays as it was.
What stays and what doesn't
A number is drawn on top of each page and nothing inside the page is moved. The result line names the two things that can be removed, a PDF/A mark and fast web view, when your file had them.
A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.
Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.
When it won't run
Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because numbering it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.
- The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Numbering it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
- Those settings can't be used. Pick them again.
- That text can't be drawn with the font we have. Use Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters.
- The only page is the one you chose to leave without a number, so there is nothing to add. Your file is unchanged.
Adding page numbers: what to expect
Pick a bare number, Page 1, or Page 1 of 12, and then one of six places: top or bottom, left, center or right. The number is small and dark grey, and it sits well inside the edge of the page, nearer the edge on a small page. A page that was scanned sideways, or one with a crop box, gets its number in the corner you see on screen, the right way up.
Numbering starts at 1 unless you type another first number, and every page counts from there. If you leave the first page without a number, the cover stays clean and page 2 still shows the number after the first one, so the count is not shifted. Page labels already in the file, like i, ii, iii, are ignored.
The numbers are real text in the page, drawn in Helvetica, so a reader can select them and a search can find them. Each page gains a few hundred bytes. The new file is named after the original with -numbered added, and a PDF with a digital signature is held back first, because adding anything to it breaks the signature.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Can the numbering start at a number other than 1?
Yes. Type the first number, from 0 upwards. Every page counts from it, so ten pages that start at 5 end at 14.
Can I leave the cover page without a number?
Yes. Tick the box to leave the first page bare. The second page then shows the number after the first, so nothing is shifted.
Will the number cover something on my page?
It is drawn on top of the page, in the margin. It covers nothing unless the page has content right at its edge, so look at the result before you send it on.
Does it work on a scanned PDF?
Yes. A scan is a picture for each page, and the number is added over it.
