How to repair a damaged PDF
Add your PDF
Drop the damaged file above or choose it.
Press Repair
The file is read, its pages are counted, a new file is written and read back by a second reader.
Download the copy
If every page came back, the copy is offered. If some did not, you see how many and decide.
What stays and what doesn't
A repaired file is written again from what could be read. These are the things that may not come along to it:
A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.
Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.
A damaged file can lose pages. If some cannot be recovered, the result is kept only after you say so.
When it won't run
Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because repairing it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.
- The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Repairing it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
- We couldn't recover a single page of The PDF. Nothing was changed.
- Some pages of The PDF could not be recovered.
- This PDF opens and every page reads without a problem, so there is nothing to repair. Your file is unchanged.
Repairing a PDF: what to expect
Most damaged files have a broken index: the table a reader uses to find things is wrong, missing, or cut off. The pages are all there, and the tool writes a new index. Other damage is junk before or after the file, or a lost branch of the list of pages.
The tool compares the pages it found with the number the file says it has. It never calls a copy repaired when pages are missing: it shows how many came back, and keeps the copy only after you say so. A page whose content cannot be read stays as a blank page, so the numbering holds, and it counts as lost.
When the list of pages itself is gone, a file cannot say how many pages it had. The tool then reports what it found and says so. Pages found without a list come back in the order they sit in the file, which may not be the order you remember.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Can it recover every file?
No. A file that lost its pages cannot get them back. Then the tool says so and writes nothing.
What if pages are lost?
You see how many came back and how many the file claimed, and you choose whether to keep the copy. Nothing is saved before that.
What if a file only has a broken index?
Then every page is there and the copy is complete. The tool checks that by counting, not by trusting the index.
What if the file is not damaged?
You get your file back unchanged, with a line that says it opened and every page read.
A password-protected or signed file?
A locked file is repaired with its password and comes back locked. A signed file loses its signature, so you are asked first.
