How to split a PDF
Add your PDF
Drop it above or choose it. Several PDFs are split one after the other.
Say where to cut
Pick pages in the page view or type them like 1-3, 5, or pick Every N pages. The line under the box shows the files you will get.
Split and download
Save each piece, or all of them as one .zip.
What stays and what doesn't
A piece is a new PDF built from its own pages. These are the things that do not come along to it:
- the password
- the PDF/A mark
- XFA form data
- bookmarks
- named destinations
- links to pages that are not in the result
- page labels
- form fields (they stay on the page but can no longer be filled in)
- reading-order tags used by screen readers
- attached files
- scripts
- extra properties
A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.
Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.
When it won't run
Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because splitting it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.
- The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Splitting it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
- "five" isn't a page or a range. Try 1-3, 5.
- "20" matches no page of this PDF.
- Type the pages you want, like 1-3, 5.
- This PDF would come out as one piece, so there is nothing to split. Your file is unchanged.
- 1,001 files is more than the limit of 1,000. Use a bigger number.
Splitting a PDF: what to expect
Type the pages you want as ranges, like 1-3, 5, 8-, and each range becomes a PDF of its own. Or choose Every N pages and the file is cut into equal pieces, the last one taking whatever is left over. The line under the box lists the files you will get before you press anything, so a typing mistake shows up there and not in the result.
A piece holds the text and pictures of its pages, plus the title, author, subject and keywords of the original. Because every piece carries its own copy of the fonts and images its pages use, the pieces together can add up to more than the original file. When they do, the result line says so, and that is how the format works rather than a fault.
One run makes at most 1,000 files. The pieces download together as one .zip, or one at a time from the row, and each is named after your file with a number added. If the ranges cover the whole file there is nothing to split, so the file comes back unchanged with a line saying why.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
How do I type the pages?
Pages and ranges, separated by commas: 1-3, 5, 8-. Each range becomes its own file. "Every 5" cuts a file into pieces of five pages, the last one with the rest.
Can I keep only some pages in one file?
One range makes one file: type 2-5 and you get a PDF of pages 2 to 5. For pages that are not next to each other, use Delete PDF pages for the ones you don't want.
Why are the pieces bigger than the original together?
Each piece carries the fonts and images its own pages use, so a file cut into many pieces adds up to more than the original.
What if my PDF has a password?
A PDF that needs a password asks for it on its own row. A digitally signed PDF is held back, because splitting breaks the signature; you can continue without the signature, which is then removed. A PDF that opens but forbids editing asks before its limits are removed.
What is left out of a piece?
If your file has them, these do not come along to a piece: the password, the PDF/A mark, XFA form data, bookmarks, named destinations, links to pages that are not in the result, page labels, form fields (they stay on the page but can no longer be filled in), reading-order tags used by screen readers, attached files, scripts and extra properties. The row of the result names the ones your file really had.
