How to sign a PDF

  1. Add your PDF

Drop it above or choose it.

  2. Make your signature

Draw it, type it in a handwriting font, or add a picture of it. Place it on the page and size it.

  3. Download the signed copy

Press Sign PDF and save the new file. Your original stays as it was.

What stays and what doesn't

Your signature becomes part of the page. These are the things that do not come along to the new file:

A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.

Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.

When it won't run

Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because signing it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.

  • The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Signing it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue

  • That box doesn't fit inside the picture. Check the left, top, width and height.
  • That text can't be drawn with the font we have. Use Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters.
  • "five" isn't a page or a range. Try 1-3, 5.
  • "20" matches no page of this PDF.
  • Type the pages you want, like 1-3, 5.

Signing a PDF: what to expect

This adds a visible signature to the page, the way you would sign a printout. It is a drawing on the page. It is not a digital signature made with a certificate, and it does not show up as one in a PDF reader.

Whether a signature of this kind is enough depends on the document and on where you are. Many agreements only need your name on the page; some need a certificate signature or a witness. Check what yours needs.

You can put the same signature, initials or a date on this page, on every page, on the last page or on the pages you type. A signed file is held back until you agree to drop its existing signature.

Questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Is this a digital signature?

No. It puts a visible signature on the page. A digital signature is made with a certificate and checked by the reader.

Can I use my signature again?

If you choose to remember it, it stays in this browser only. You can forget it at any time.

Can I sign every page?

Yes. Place initials once and put them on all pages, or on the pages you type.

Does it work on a signed PDF?

The existing signature would break, so the file is held back until you agree to drop it.
