How to edit or remove the metadata of a PDF
Add your PDF
Drop it above or choose it. Its properties fill the fields.
Change what you need
Type in a field, empty one to remove it, set the created date, or tick Clear all.
Download the new file
Press Save. The pages are not touched.
What stays and what doesn't
Only the properties change. When you clear all, these also go:
A digital signature is removed, only after you say so: any change to a signed file breaks the signature, so the file is held back until you choose to continue.
Print, copy and edit restrictions are removed, only after you say so: the file is held back until you choose to continue.
When it won't run
Five things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A PDF that needs a password asks for it there, and a wrong password is refused with a sentence that says so. A digitally signed PDF is held back until you choose to continue, because editing it would break the signature. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged. A job too large for this device says so, and in every case nothing is changed and your original stays as it was.
- The PDF opens, but its owner has switched off printing, copying or editing. Editing it would remove those restrictions.Remove the restrictions and continue
- A whole number of pixels from 1 to 16383.
- This PDF already has those properties. Your file is unchanged.
Editing PDF metadata: what to expect
A PDF keeps its title, author, subject and keywords in two places: the document information and, in most files, an XMP block. This tool writes both, so a reader that looks at either one sees the same thing. Properties you do not touch are left as they were.
Clear all removes every property, every XMP block (also those attached to single pages and pictures) and the private data some editors leave inside a file. It does not touch the names of people who wrote comments, files attached to the PDF, what was typed into form fields, or the words on the pages. To take content out, use Redact PDF.
Properties are not an anonymiser: the text, pictures and fonts of a document can also say who made it. A date you set keeps the time zone it was written in, and a new modified date uses the zone of your clock.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Your PDFs are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Does clearing make the file anonymous?
No. It removes the properties this tool lists. The text, pictures and fonts of the document, and the names on comments, can still say who made it.
What is the XMP block?
A second copy of the properties that many files carry, written in XML. This tool changes it together with the document information, and keeps everything else it says.
What happens to the modified date?
By default it becomes the time of the save, in the zone of your clock. You can keep the old one. Clear all removes it.
Does it work on a PDF/A file?
Yes. The file keeps saying it is PDF/A and the two places stay in step. Clear all removes the XMP block, so the file stops saying it is PDF/A, and the page tells you before you save.
What about a signed PDF?
Changing the properties breaks the signature, so you are asked first. Without your yes the file is left alone.
