XLSM is XLSX with a VBA macro project attached. Excel refuses to save macros inside a plain XLSX, so a workbook with macros gets this extension. The cells are stored exactly as in XLSX; the macros are a separate binary part of the package.
XLSM can carry macros, which email systems often block and which other spreadsheet apps cannot run. XLSM keeps a workbook's macros.
