XLSM carries VBA macros, which email systems often block and which only Excel can run. Saving as XLSX keeps the cells and drops the macros, giving a file that is safe to share and opens in any spreadsheet program.
Formulas come across as the values they last calculated, and formatting such as colours and column widths is not carried over. Every sheet is kept, under its own name. XLSX holds at most 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet. The macros in an XLSM are neither run nor copied; only the cell values are read.
XLSM is XLSX with a VBA macro project attached. Excel refuses to save macros inside a plain XLSX, so a workbook with macros gets this extension. The cells are stored exactly as in XLSX; the macros are a separate binary part of the package.

Yes. Spreadsheet files up to 150 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
