Most APIs and programming languages take JSON, not YAML. Every YAML document that uses plain maps, lists and scalars has an exact JSON equivalent. YAML comments have no place in JSON and are dropped.
Keys, nesting and values carry over. Comments in the YAML file are not carried over, because only the data is read. A YAML file with several documents (separated by ---) is read as a list of documents.
YAML expresses the same structures as JSON using indentation instead of brackets, and allows comments. It is the usual choice for configuration in tools like Docker Compose, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions.

The values are kept. Anything JSON has no way to express, such as formatting, formulas or nesting, is simplified or left out.

Yes. Data files up to 300 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
