How to convert YAML to MD

  1. Add your YAML config files

Drop YAML (YML) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. MD is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the MD, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The YAML to MD converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your config files are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

YAML to MD: what to expect

YAML's indentation rules are easy to break, and many APIs only accept JSON. Markdown is plain text that stays readable and is easy to keep in version control. YAML is at home in configuration files written by people; MD is the usual choice for READMEs, notes and documentation.

A list of records becomes a table with one row per record. Nested keys turn into columns named like address.city, list items into columns like tags.0, and a key that only some records have leaves empty cells in the others.

YAML vs MD

YAML

YAML data

YAML expresses the same structures as JSON using indentation instead of brackets, and allows comments. It is the usual choice for configuration in tools like Docker Compose, Kubernetes and GitHub Actions.

Markdown

Markdown is plain text with a few symbols for headings, lists, links and emphasis. It is readable as-is and converts cleanly to HTML, which is why developers and note-takers favour it.

Questions

Are my config files uploaded anywhere?

No. The YAML to MD conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting YAML to MD?

The content is carried over as faithfully as MD allows; features that MD does not have are left out.

Can I convert several YAML files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert YAML to MD on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the YAML file, press Convert and save the MD. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Data files up to 300 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
