How to convert DOCX to MD

  1. Add your DOCX documents

Drop DOCX (Word) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. MD is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the MD, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The DOCX to MD converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your documents are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

DOCX to MD: what to expect

A DOCX can look different on another computer, and not everyone has a word processor. Markdown is plain text that stays readable and is easy to keep in version control. DOCX is at home in documents that will be edited again; MD is the usual choice for READMEs, notes and documentation.

The document is read by its structure (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links and images), not by its page layout, so fonts, margins, columns, headers and footers are not reproduced.

DOCX vs MD

DOCX

Word document

DOCX is the format Microsoft Word has saved by default since Office 2007. Inside it is a ZIP archive of XML files describing text, styles and images. Layout can shift between Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice because each lays the text out itself.

Opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages, LibreOffice

MD

Markdown

Markdown is plain text with a few symbols for headings, lists, links and emphasis. It is readable as-is and converts cleanly to HTML, which is why developers and note-takers favour it.

Opens in Any text editor; rendered by GitHub, Obsidian, Notion and many note apps

Questions

Are my documents uploaded anywhere?

No. The DOCX to MD conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting DOCX to MD?

Text is kept. Formatting carries over only as far as MD supports it.

Can I convert several DOCX files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert DOCX to MD on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the DOCX file, press Convert and save the MD. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Files up to 150 MB are accepted; a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
