ODT is unfamiliar to many recipients and does not always open cleanly in Word. Markdown is plain text that stays readable and is easy to keep in version control. ODT is at home in documents in open-source office suites; MD is the usual choice for READMEs, notes and documentation.
The text is read through its structure (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and images); the per-run styling OpenDocument carries is dropped, so fonts and page design are not reproduced.
ODT is the open-standard document format used by LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice. Word and Google Docs can open it, though complex formatting does not always survive the trip.

Yes. Files up to 150 MB are accepted; a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
