How to convert RTF to MD

  1. Add your RTF documents

Drop RTF files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. MD is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the MD, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The RTF to MD converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your documents are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

RTF to MD: what to expect

RTF supports only basic formatting and produces bulky files. Markdown is plain text that stays readable and is easy to keep in version control. RTF is at home in basic formatted text that must open anywhere; MD is the usual choice for READMEs, notes and documentation.

Headings (styles named Heading, or a bold paragraph set much larger than the text), lists, tables and PNG or JPEG pictures are read; fonts, colours, headers, footers and footnotes are dropped.

RTF vs MD

RTF

Rich Text document

RTF carries basic formatting such as bold, fonts and simple tables in a plain-text wrapper that nearly every word processor reads. It does not support modern layout features.

Opens in Word, WordPad, TextEdit, LibreOffice and most word processors

MD

Markdown

Markdown is plain text with a few symbols for headings, lists, links and emphasis. It is readable as-is and converts cleanly to HTML, which is why developers and note-takers favour it.

Opens in Any text editor; rendered by GitHub, Obsidian, Notion and many note apps

Questions

Are my documents uploaded anywhere?

No. The RTF to MD conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting RTF to MD?

Text is kept. Formatting carries over only as far as MD supports it.

Can I convert several RTF files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert RTF to MD on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the RTF file, press Convert and save the MD. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Files up to 150 MB are accepted; a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
