How to convert XML to MD

  1. Add your XML data files

Drop XML files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. MD is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the MD, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The XML to MD converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your data files are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

XML to MD: what to expect

XML is verbose and tedious to work with in most modern tooling. Markdown is plain text that stays readable and is easy to keep in version control. XML is at home in document-like data, feeds and enterprise systems; MD is the usual choice for READMEs, notes and documentation.

A list of records becomes a table with one row per record. Nested keys turn into columns named like address.city, list items into columns like tags.0, and a key that only some records have leaves empty cells in the others.

XML vs MD

XML

XML data

XML wraps data in nested tags with attributes. It is verbose but strict, and remains the basis of RSS feeds, SVG, Office documents and many enterprise interfaces. Its attributes and mixed content have no exact equivalent in JSON.

MD

Markdown

Markdown is plain text with a few symbols for headings, lists, links and emphasis. It is readable as-is and converts cleanly to HTML, which is why developers and note-takers favour it.

Questions

Are my data files uploaded anywhere?

No. The XML to MD conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting XML to MD?

The content is carried over as faithfully as MD allows; features that MD does not have are left out.

Can I convert several XML files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert XML to MD on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the XML file, press Convert and save the MD. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Data files up to 300 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
