How to resize an image

  1. Add your pictures

Drop them above or choose them. JPG, PNG and WebP are taken, and each picture is resized on its own row.

  2. Type the size

Fill in a width, a height or both, or switch to Percent. The line under the boxes shows the size you will get before you press anything.

  3. Resize and download

Save each picture, or all of them as one .zip.

What stays and what doesn't

A resized picture is drawn again at its new size and saved in the format it came in. These are the things that do not come along to it:

  • camera and capture details such as make, model and date taken
  • the GPS location
  • titles, authors, keywords and comments
  • the small preview stored inside the file
  • content credentials and edit history (C2PA)
  • the embedded colour profile (colours are changed to sRGB first; very saturated colours can look slightly flatter)
  • the stored print resolution
  • other data stored in or after the picture, such as a motion-photo clip, program-specific blocks or a modification time

A JPEG or WebP saved again loses a little detail.

When it won't run

Two things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged, and a picture too large for this device says so, with the limit. In both cases nothing is changed and your original stays as it was. A file in a format the page does not take, such as a GIF, gets a sentence instead of a row.

  • The picture is an animation. This tool would keep only the first frame, so it leaves the file alone.
  • The picture stores its colours as CMYK. This tool can't change it without altering the colours.
  • The picture stores 16 bits per colour. This tool works in 8 bits and would flatten it, so it leaves the file alone.
  • A whole number of pixels from 1 to 16383.
  • A whole number from 1 to 400. Above 100 makes the picture bigger.
  • The picture is already that size.

Resizing an image: what to expect

Type a width or a height and the other side follows, so the picture keeps its shape. Type both and Fit inside gives the largest size that fits the box without bending the picture, while Stretch gives exactly that width and height, even if the picture is distorted. Percent takes a whole number from 1 to 400 and scales both sides together. Enlarging is allowed, but a picture made larger does not gain detail.

Sizes are those of the picture as you see it. A photo that carries a note saying it should be shown turned is resized after the turn, and the result is upright with no note left. A side can be up to 16383 pixels long, and the result has to stay inside the pixel limits further down, which is worked out from the file's header before anything runs.

Pixels are all this page changes. It does not aim at a file size, which is the job of Compress image. A JPEG or a lossy WebP is saved again at about the quality the original had, and a PNG is written exactly, so a smaller picture makes a smaller file because it has fewer pixels, not because it was squeezed.

The work happens in your device's memory, so the limit is your device's. On a computer a JPEG or WebP can have up to 40 megapixels and a PNG up to 50; on a phone every format is limited to 16 megapixels. A JPEG that is being made smaller is read in a way that needs less memory, so a larger photo may be accepted than those numbers say. A result that would be too big says so and changes nothing.

Questions

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Your pictures are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Can I make the file a certain size in KB or MB?

Not on this page. Resize image sets the width and height in pixels, and the size of the file follows from that. To land under a size in KB or MB, use Compress image, which picks the settings for the size you name.

Will the picture look worse?

A picture made smaller looks the same at its new size, with fewer pixels to zoom into. A picture made larger is the same detail spread over more pixels, so it looks softer when you look closely. A JPEG or a lossy WebP is saved again, which loses a little detail; a PNG loses none.

What is the difference between Fit inside and Stretch?

Fit inside never bends the picture: it gives the largest size that fits in the width and height you typed. Stretch gives exactly the width and height you typed, so a picture of another shape comes out squeezed or pulled wide.

Does a transparent PNG stay transparent?

Yes. A PNG or a WebP keeps its transparency, and the soft edges are resized along with the rest. A JPEG has no transparency to keep.

How big a picture can I resize?

On a computer, a JPEG or a WebP of up to 40 megapixels and a PNG of up to 50, and together up to 300 MB of pictures in one run. A phone has less memory, so it is limited to 16 megapixels for every format. A picture over the limit is refused on its own row, and your original is never changed.
