How to pick a color from an image

  1. Add your picture

Drop it above or choose it. A JPG, PNG or WebP works.

  2. Click a colour

Move over the picture to see a magnified view. Click, or press Enter with the arrow keys, to pick the pixel under it.

  3. Copy it

Copy the HEX, RGB or HSL value, or pick a colour from the palette.

What stays and what doesn't

The picture is only read. Nothing is changed or saved.

When it won't run

Two things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged, and a picture too large for this device says so, with the limit. In both cases nothing is changed and your original stays as it was. A file in a format the page does not take, such as a GIF, gets a sentence instead of a row.

Picking a colour: what to expect

A pick is the exact pixel under the pointer, not a blur of its neighbours. The magnified view shows the pixels around it, so you can aim at a single one. On a phone, press and slide a finger: the magnified view sits above your fingertip, and the colour is picked when you lift it.

The average colour is worked out in linear light, which is how light really adds up, and not by averaging the numbers on screen, which comes out too dark. The palette gives the main colours of the picture, biggest first, with the share each one covers, and you can ask for more or fewer. The same picture always gives the same palette.

Colours are read as your browser shows them, in sRGB. A picture with another colour profile is converted first, so the value matches what you see on screen and may differ a little from the number inside the file.

Questions

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Your pictures are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Is the picture sent anywhere?

No. It is read on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Why is the colour not the same as in my design tool?

This tool reads the colour as your browser shows it, in sRGB. A design tool may show the number stored in the file under another colour profile. A JPG that is compressed also has small changes next to every edge.

What is the difference between the average and the palette?

The average mixes every pixel into one colour, which is often a muddy middle. The palette finds the colours that really stand out in the picture and tells you how much of it each one covers.

What happens with see-through pixels?

A pixel that is partly see-through shows its colour and how opaque it is. A fully see-through pixel has no colour, and the palette and the average leave it out.

Can I pick a colour from anywhere on my screen?

No. A web page can only read the picture you add to it, which is also why nothing outside it is seen.
