How to make a favicon

  1. Add your picture

Drop it above or choose it. A square picture of a logo works best.

  2. Choose how it fits

Keep the whole picture or fill the square, and pick the colour behind the Apple touch and maskable icons.

  3. Make and download

Save the zip, put the files in the root folder of your site and paste the lines into the head of your pages.

What stays and what doesn't

The icons are new pictures made from yours. These are the things that do not come along to them:

  • camera and capture details such as make, model and date taken
  • the GPS location
  • titles, authors, keywords and comments
  • the small preview stored inside the file
  • content credentials and edit history (C2PA)
  • the embedded colour profile (colours are changed to sRGB first; very saturated colours can look slightly flatter)
  • the stored print resolution
  • other data stored in or after the picture, such as a motion-photo clip, program-specific blocks or a modification time

When it won't run

Two things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged, and a picture too large for this device says so, with the limit. In both cases nothing is changed and your original stays as it was. A file in a format the page does not take, such as a GIF, gets a sentence instead of a row.

  • The picture is an animation. This tool would keep only the first frame, so it leaves the file alone.
  • The picture stores its colours as CMYK. This tool can't change it without altering the colours.
  • The picture stores 16 bits per colour. This tool works in 8 bits and would flatten it, so it leaves the file alone.

Making a favicon: what to expect

One picture becomes seven files: favicon.ico with three icons inside it (sixteen, thirty-two and forty-eight pixels), apple-touch-icon.png, two PNG icons for web apps, a maskable icon, a site.webmanifest that lists the three app icons, and the link lines for your head. Every size is made from your picture, not from a smaller icon.

The Apple touch icon has no transparency, because iOS fills transparent areas with black, so it sits on the colour you choose, white to begin with. The two plain app icons and the icons inside favicon.ico keep your picture's transparency. The maskable icon is for Android launchers that cut an icon to a circle or a rounded square, so the picture stays inside the middle part and your colour fills the rest. It has its own entry in the manifest.

Whole picture keeps all of it inside the square. Fill the square cuts the long side at both ends so the square is full. Trim empty edges removes transparent margin first, so a logo with space around it does not shrink to a dot. A picture smaller than the big app icons is made bigger and comes out soft, so start from a larger one. The camera details and the location in a photo do not come along.

Questions

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Your pictures are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Which sizes does favicon.ico hold?

Sixteen, thirty-two and forty-eight pixels, each stored as a PNG inside the icon file. The browser picks the one it needs.

Where do the files go?

In the root folder of your site, so they load from addresses like /favicon.ico. Paste the lines into the head of your pages. If you keep the files somewhere else, change the paths in the lines and in site.webmanifest.

What is a maskable icon?

An icon that a phone may cut to a circle or a rounded square. Yours keeps the picture inside the middle part and fills the rest with your colour, so nothing important is cut off.

Can it make an SVG favicon?

No. It makes ICO and PNG files, which every browser reads.

Is the picture sent anywhere?

No. It is read and changed on your device, and nothing is uploaded.
