How to add a border to an image
Add your pictures
Drop them above or choose them. The same border goes round every picture.
Set the border
Type a width and choose pixels or percent, then pick a colour. The line under it gives the new size.
Add it and download
Save each picture, or all of them as one .zip.
What stays and what doesn't
The picture is placed inside the frame and saved again in the format it came in. These are the things that do not come along to it:
- camera and capture details such as make, model and date taken
- the GPS location
- titles, authors, keywords and comments
- the small preview stored inside the file
- content credentials and edit history (C2PA)
- the embedded colour profile (colours are changed to sRGB first; very saturated colours can look slightly flatter)
- the stored print resolution
- other data stored in or after the picture, such as a motion-photo clip, program-specific blocks or a modification time
A JPEG or WebP saved again loses a little detail.
When it won't run
Two things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged, and a picture too large for this device says so, with the limit. In both cases nothing is changed and your original stays as it was. A file in a format the page does not take, such as a GIF, gets a sentence instead of a row.
- The picture is an animation. This tool would keep only the first frame, so it leaves the file alone.
- The picture stores its colours as CMYK. This tool can't change it without altering the colours.
- The picture stores 16 bits per colour. This tool works in 8 bits and would flatten it, so it leaves the file alone.
- Up to 2000 px, or up to 50 percent of the shorter side.
Adding a border: what to expect
The border goes round the outside, so the picture is not covered or cut: a 20 pixel border on a 4000 by 3000 picture gives a picture 4040 by 3040. A width in pixels can be up to 2000. A width in percent is a share of the shorter side of the picture, from 1 to 50, rounded to whole pixels and never less than one.
The colour is a plain, solid colour: white, black, light grey or any colour you pick. It is opaque, so a PNG or a WebP with transparency keeps its own see-through areas inside the frame while the border itself is solid. A JPEG has no transparency, so the border is a colour there too.
Because the picture grows, the result must still fit the limits below, and a border that would make the picture too big is refused with a sentence before anything is drawn. A JPEG or a lossy WebP is saved again at about the quality it had, and a PNG is written exactly.
The work happens in your device's memory: the new picture can have up to 40 megapixels as a JPEG or WebP and 50 as a PNG on a computer, and 16 megapixels of any format on a phone. No side can be longer than 16383 pixels.
Questions
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. Your pictures are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Does the border cover part of the picture?
No. It is added outside the picture, so the picture keeps its whole area and the file gets bigger by twice the border on each side.
Can I make the border a gradient or a pattern?
No. It is one solid colour, which you choose from a few presets or with the colour picker.
What does percent mean for the width?
A share of the shorter side of the picture. On a picture 4000 by 3000, 5 percent is 150 pixels, because the shorter side is 3000.
What happens with a transparent PNG?
The transparency of the picture stays inside the frame, and the border around it is solid.
