How to adjust the brightness, contrast and colour of an image

  1. Add your picture

Drop it above or choose it. A JPG, PNG or WebP works.

  2. Move the sliders

The picture beside them follows. Hold the button under it to see the original.

  3. Apply and save

Press Apply and download the result. Your original is untouched.

What stays and what doesn't

The result is a new file in the same format. These are the things that do not come along to it:

  • camera and capture details such as make, model and date taken
  • the GPS location
  • titles, authors, keywords and comments
  • the small preview stored inside the file
  • content credentials and edit history (C2PA)
  • the embedded colour profile (colours are changed to sRGB first; very saturated colours can look slightly flatter)
  • the stored print resolution
  • other data stored in or after the picture, such as a motion-photo clip, program-specific blocks or a modification time

A JPEG or WebP saved again loses a little detail.

When it won't run

Two things stop a run before it writes anything, and each is said on the file's row. A file that cannot be read is reported as damaged, and a picture too large for this device says so, with the limit. In both cases nothing is changed and your original stays as it was. A file in a format the page does not take, such as a GIF, gets a sentence instead of a row.

  • The picture is an animation. This tool would keep only the first frame, so it leaves the file alone.
  • The picture stores its colours as CMYK. This tool can't change it without altering the colours.
  • The picture stores 16 bits per colour. This tool works in 8 bits and would flatten it, so it leaves the file alone.
  • Every setting is at its start value, so there is nothing to adjust.

Adjusting a picture: what to expect

The preview and the saved file are made by the same code. The preview works on a smaller copy of your picture so it can keep up with the sliders, and the saved file works on the whole picture, so what you see is what you get.

Brightness and contrast come first, then saturation and hue, then the tone switches, and the negative switch comes last. The settings follow the same rules as the filters in your browser, so the result looks the same in any viewer. Transparency is never changed.

A JPG or a WebP is saved again, so it can lose a little detail, and a PNG is saved without any loss. If you only want a plain black and white picture or its negative, the tools linked below do just that.

Questions

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Your pictures are processed inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Is the picture sent anywhere?

No. It is read and changed on your device, and nothing is uploaded.

Is the preview the same as the saved picture?

Yes. Both use the same function. The preview is made from a smaller copy, so a very fine detail can look a little different on screen than in the saved file.

Why is the Apply button off?

Every setting is at its start value, so there is nothing to change. Move a slider or switch something on.

Does it change the transparency of a PNG?

No. Only the colours change. Every pixel keeps the transparency it had.
