How to convert JPG to ICO

  1. Add your JPG photos

Drop JPG (JPEG, JFIF) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. ICO is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the ICO, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JPG to ICO converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your photos are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JPG to ICO: what to expect

ICO is the format browsers look for at /favicon.ico and the one Windows uses for shortcuts and applications. It holds the same artwork at several small sizes. A JPG has no transparency, so the icon will be a filled square; crop the picture to a square first for the best result.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can pick which icon sizes go into the file.

JPG vs ICO

JPG

JPEG image

JPG (also written JPEG) is the format almost every camera and website uses for photographs. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, which is why it suits photos and struggles with sharp text or flat colour.

Icon file

An ICO file bundles the same icon at several sizes, such as 16, 32 and 48 pixels, so Windows or a browser can pick the sharpest one. It is still the most compatible way to ship a favicon.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The JPG to ICO conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting JPG to ICO reduce quality?

The picture is scaled down: an icon file holds small square copies of it (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels by default), so anything larger loses detail and a picture that is not square gets empty space around it. Each size is stored without further loss. You can pick the sizes under Options.

Can I convert several JPG files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JPG to ICO on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JPG file, press Convert and save the ICO. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
