How to convert AVIF to ICO

  1. Add your AVIF images

Drop AVIF files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. ICO is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the ICO, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

AVIF to ICO: what to expect

AVIF is not opened by many desktop apps, older phones or upload forms. ICO holds several sizes in one file, which is what favicons and Windows shortcuts need. AVIF is at home in the smallest images for websites; ICO is the usual choice for website favicons and Windows app icons.

ICO holds a single still image, so an animated AVIF does not stay animated. The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can pick which icon sizes go into the file.

AVIF vs ICO

AVIF

AVIF image

AVIF stores a still image using the AV1 video codec. It usually beats both JPG and WebP on file size and supports transparency, HDR and wide colour. Current browsers display it, but many image editors, viewers and upload forms still do not.

Opens in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16 or later; few desktop apps

ICO

Icon file

An ICO file bundles the same icon at several sizes, such as 16, 32 and 48 pixels, so Windows or a browser can pick the sharpest one. It is still the most compatible way to ship a favicon.

Opens in Windows and every browser (as favicon.ico)

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The AVIF to ICO conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting AVIF to ICO reduce quality?

The picture is scaled down: an icon file holds small square copies of it (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels by default), so anything larger loses detail and a picture that is not square gets empty space around it. Each size is stored without further loss. You can pick the sizes under Options.

Can I convert several AVIF files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert AVIF to ICO on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the AVIF file, press Convert and save the ICO. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
