ICNS to ICO: what to expect

ICNS opens only on a Mac and in icon tools. ICO holds several sizes in one file, which is what favicons and Windows shortcuts need. ICNS is at home in macOS application and folder icons; ICO is the usual choice for website favicons and Windows app icons.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can pick which icon sizes go into the file.

If the icon file holds several sizes, the largest one is converted.

ICNS vs ICO

ICNS

macOS icon

ICNS is the icon container of macOS. One file holds the same icon at many sizes, from 16 to 1024 pixels including Retina versions, each with transparency. Every Mac app carries one in its bundle.

Icon file

An ICO file bundles the same icon at several sizes, such as 16, 32 and 48 pixels, so Windows or a browser can pick the sharpest one. It is still the most compatible way to ship a favicon.

Questions

Are my icons uploaded anywhere?

No. The ICNS to ICO conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting ICNS to ICO reduce quality?

The picture is scaled down: an icon file holds small square copies of it (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels by default), so anything larger loses detail and a picture that is not square gets empty space around it. Each size is stored without further loss. You can pick the sizes under Options.

Can I convert several ICNS files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert ICNS to ICO on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the ICNS file, press Convert and save the ICO. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
