How to convert HEIC to WebP

  1. Add your HEIC photos

Drop HEIC (HEIF) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. WebP is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the WebP, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The HEIC to WebP converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your photos are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

HEIC to WebP: what to expect

If the photo is headed for a website, WebP is a better destination than JPG: it is typically 25 to 35 percent smaller at similar quality and every current browser displays it. HEIC itself cannot be used on the web because browsers other than Safari do not decode it.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

Most browsers other than Safari cannot read HEIC themselves, so a HEIC decoder of under 1 MB is downloaded the first time and kept in the browser cache. The WebP encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to WebP and is cached afterwards.

HEIC vs WebP

HEIC

HEIC photo

HEIC is what iPhones have saved photos as since iOS 11 in 2017. It uses the HEVC video codec to store a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG. Outside Apple's own apps, support is patchy: Windows needs an extension and most websites refuse it.

Opens in iPhone, iPad and Mac natively; Windows needs extra codecs; most browsers cannot display it

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is Google's image format for the web. It is typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports both transparency and animation. Browsers handle it well; older editors, printers' portals and some messaging apps do not.

Opens in All current browsers; many older desktop apps and upload forms do not accept it

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The HEIC to WebP conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting HEIC to WebP reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes WebP in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.

Can I convert several HEIC files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert HEIC to WebP on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the HEIC file, press Convert and save the WebP. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
