AFDESIGN to WebP: what to expect

AFDESIGN opens only in Affinity, so a client or a website cannot show it without a converted picture. WebP is smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and keeps transparency. AFDESIGN is at home in vector illustration, logos and interface design that is still being edited; WebP is the usual choice for images on websites.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

The WebP encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to WebP and is cached afterwards.

AFDESIGN is the project file of Affinity Designer, Serif's vector illustration and design app. It holds curves, shapes, text, symbols, artboards and raster layers, so a design can be reopened and changed at any size. ToAny reads the preview picture Affinity saves inside the file, so what you get is Affinity's own render of the document, at the size Affinity stored it (up to about 512 pixels on the long side), not the layers or the full-size artwork.

WebP is Google's image format for the web. It is typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports both transparency and animation. Browsers handle it well; older editors, printers' portals and some messaging apps do not.

Questions

Are my designs uploaded anywhere?

No. The AFDESIGN to WebP conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting AFDESIGN to WebP reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes WebP in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.
