How to convert EXR to WebP

  1. Add your EXR renders

Drop EXR (OpenEXR image) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. WebP is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the WebP, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The EXR to WebP converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your renders are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

EXR to WebP: what to expect

EXR files are large and open in almost nothing outside 3D and compositing software. WebP is smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and keeps transparency. EXR is at home in film and VFX frames, 3D renders and lighting data that must keep far more range than a screen shows; WebP is the usual choice for images on websites.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

EXR stores floating-point light values that a screen cannot show, so the picture is tone-mapped: highlights above white are compressed with the ACES filmic curve (a picture that already fits within white only gets the sRGB curve), then saved with 8 bits per channel. A file with several parts shows its colour image, deep files are not supported, and a picture over 24 megapixels is too large to tone-map in the browser. The WebP encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to WebP and is cached afterwards.

EXR vs WebP

EXR

OpenEXR image

OpenEXR stores each pixel as floating-point light values, usually 16-bit half floats, so highlights can be thousands of times brighter than white without clipping. Renderers and compositors use it to pass frames between steps. A screen or an ordinary image format cannot hold that range, so turning an EXR into a PNG or JPG means choosing how the bright values are squeezed down. Here that choice is automatic and the exposure is fixed, so a very dark or flat render cannot be brightened; EXR alpha is read as straight, so a premultiplied render can show dark edges.

WebP image

WebP is Google's image format for the web. It is typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports both transparency and animation. Browsers handle it well; older editors, printers' portals and some messaging apps do not.

Questions

Are my renders uploaded anywhere?

No. The EXR to WebP conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting EXR to WebP reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes WebP in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.

Can I convert several EXR files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert EXR to WebP on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the EXR file, press Convert and save the WebP. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
