How to convert EXR to JPG

  1. Add your EXR renders

Drop EXR (OpenEXR image) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. JPG is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the JPG, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The EXR to JPG converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your renders are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

EXR to JPG: what to expect

EXR files are large and open in almost nothing outside 3D and compositing software. JPG opens on every device and is accepted by practically every upload form. EXR is at home in film and VFX frames, 3D renders and lighting data that must keep far more range than a screen shows; JPG is the usual choice for photos you need to share, upload or print. JPG is lossy, so keep the EXR original if you may need full quality later.

JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas of an EXR are filled with a solid colour, white by default; you can change it under Options. The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

EXR stores floating-point light values that a screen cannot show, so the picture is tone-mapped: highlights above white are compressed with the ACES filmic curve (a picture that already fits within white only gets the sRGB curve), then saved with 8 bits per channel. A file with several parts shows its colour image, deep files are not supported, and a picture over 24 megapixels is too large to tone-map in the browser.

EXR vs JPG

EXR

OpenEXR image

OpenEXR stores each pixel as floating-point light values, usually 16-bit half floats, so highlights can be thousands of times brighter than white without clipping. Renderers and compositors use it to pass frames between steps. A screen or an ordinary image format cannot hold that range, so turning an EXR into a PNG or JPG means choosing how the bright values are squeezed down. Here that choice is automatic and the exposure is fixed, so a very dark or flat render cannot be brightened; EXR alpha is read as straight, so a premultiplied render can show dark edges.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the format almost every camera and website uses for photographs. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, which is why it suits photos and struggles with sharp text or flat colour.

Questions

Are my renders uploaded anywhere?

No. The EXR to JPG conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting EXR to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise or lower the quality under Options.

Can I convert several EXR files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert EXR to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the EXR file, press Convert and save the JPG. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
