How to convert JP2 to JPG

  1. Add your JP2 images

Drop JP2 (JPEG 2000, J2K) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. JPG is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the JPG, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JP2 to JPG converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your images are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JP2 to JPG: what to expect

JPEG 2000 files from archives, libraries and scanners do not open in most browsers or in many upload forms. JPG is accepted everywhere. The conversion adds a second round of lossy compression, so keep the JPEG 2000 original for archiving.

JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas of a JP2 are filled with a solid colour, white by default; you can change it under Options. The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

JPEG 2000 files with a transparency channel, extra components or subsampled colour are refused for now; greyscale and ordinary colour files convert. The decoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time and is cached.

JP2 vs JPG

JP2

JPEG 2000 image

JPEG 2000 replaces JPEG's blocky compression with wavelets, giving cleaner results at high compression and a true lossless mode. It never displaced JPEG on the web, but libraries and archives, DICOM medical images and cinema distribution use it. Safari is the only major browser that shows it.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the format almost every camera and website uses for photographs. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, which is why it suits photos and struggles with sharp text or flat colour.

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The JP2 to JPG conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting JP2 to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise or lower the quality under Options.

Can I convert several JP2 files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JP2 to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JP2 file, press Convert and save the JPG. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
