How to convert JP2 to TIFF

  1. Add your JP2 images

Drop JP2 (JPEG 2000, J2K) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. TIFF is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the TIFF, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JP2 to TIFF converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your images are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JP2 to TIFF: what to expect

JP2 does not open in Chrome, Firefox or most apps. TIFF keeps full quality and is what print shops and archives ask for. JP2 is at home in scanned archives, medical images and digital cinema; TIFF is the usual choice for scans, print production and archiving.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can resize the result.

JPEG 2000 files with a transparency channel, extra components or subsampled colour are refused for now; greyscale and ordinary colour files convert. The decoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time and is cached.

JP2 vs TIFF

JP2

JPEG 2000 image

JPEG 2000 replaces JPEG's blocky compression with wavelets, giving cleaner results at high compression and a true lossless mode. It never displaced JPEG on the web, but libraries and archives, DICOM medical images and cinema distribution use it. Safari is the only major browser that shows it.

Opens in Safari, Preview, Photoshop and medical, archive and cinema software; Chrome and Firefox do not display it

TIFF image

TIFF is the workhorse of scanning, publishing and archiving. It keeps full quality, can hold several pages and carries rich metadata, but files are large and browsers other than Safari will not display it.

Opens in Photo editors, scanners and print software; Safari is the only major browser that displays it

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The JP2 to TIFF conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting JP2 to TIFF reduce quality?

No further quality is lost: TIFF stores the decoded pixels exactly. The result is identical in content.

Can I convert several JP2 files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JP2 to TIFF on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JP2 file, press Convert and save the TIFF. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
