OpenEXR image
OpenEXR stores each pixel as floating-point light values, usually 16-bit half floats, so highlights can be thousands of times brighter than white without clipping. Renderers and compositors use it to pass frames between steps. A screen or an ordinary image format cannot hold that range, so turning an EXR into a PNG or JPG means choosing how the bright values are squeezed down. Here that choice is automatic and the exposure is fixed, so a very dark or flat render cannot be brightened; EXR alpha is read as straight, so a premultiplied render can show dark edges.
Opens in Photoshop, GIMP, Blender, Nuke and most 3D and compositing software; not browsers
