How to convert HEIC to AVIF

  1. Add your HEIC photos

Drop HEIC (HEIF) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. AVIF is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the AVIF, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The HEIC to AVIF converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your photos are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

HEIC to AVIF: what to expect

HEIC does not open in most browsers, on many Windows PCs or in a lot of upload forms. AVIF gives the smallest files of any widely supported image format. HEIC is at home in saving storage on Apple devices; AVIF is the usual choice for the smallest images for websites.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

Most browsers other than Safari cannot read HEIC themselves, so a HEIC decoder of under 1 MB is downloaded the first time and kept in the browser cache. The AVIF encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to AVIF and is cached afterwards.

HEIC vs AVIF

HEIC

HEIC photo

HEIC is what iPhones have saved photos as since iOS 11 in 2017. It uses the HEVC video codec to store a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG. Outside Apple's own apps, support is patchy: Windows needs an extension and most websites refuse it.

Opens in iPhone, iPad and Mac natively; Windows needs extra codecs; most browsers cannot display it

AVIF image

AVIF stores a still image using the AV1 video codec. It usually beats both JPG and WebP on file size and supports transparency, HDR and wide colour. Current browsers display it, but many image editors, viewers and upload forms still do not.

Opens in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari 16 or later; few desktop apps

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The HEIC to AVIF conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting HEIC to AVIF reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes AVIF in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.

Can I convert several HEIC files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert HEIC to AVIF on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the HEIC file, press Convert and save the AVIF. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
