How to convert CUR to ICO

  1. Add your CUR cursors

Drop CUR files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. ICO is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the ICO, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The CUR to ICO converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your cursors are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

CUR to ICO: what to expect

CUR is a Windows pointer format that other apps do not show as an image. ICO holds several sizes in one file, which is what favicons and Windows shortcuts need. CUR is at home in mouse pointers on Windows; ICO is the usual choice for website favicons and Windows app icons.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can pick which icon sizes go into the file.

If the cursor file holds several sizes, the largest one is converted.

CUR vs ICO

CUR

Windows cursor

CUR is structured like an ICO icon file with one addition: each image carries a hotspot, the pixel that actually does the pointing. Windows uses it for custom mouse pointers. Cursors are small, typically 32 by 32 pixels.

Opens in Windows, icon and cursor editors, GIMP and IrfanView; not browsers' image viewers

ICO

Icon file

An ICO file bundles the same icon at several sizes, such as 16, 32 and 48 pixels, so Windows or a browser can pick the sharpest one. It is still the most compatible way to ship a favicon.

Opens in Windows and every browser (as favicon.ico)

Questions

Are my cursors uploaded anywhere?

No. The CUR to ICO conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting CUR to ICO reduce quality?

The picture is scaled down: an icon file holds small square copies of it (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels by default), so anything larger loses detail and a picture that is not square gets empty space around it. Each size is stored without further loss. You can pick the sizes under Options.

Can I convert several CUR files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert CUR to ICO on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the CUR file, press Convert and save the ICO. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
