How to convert JPG to PPM

  1. Add your JPG photos

Drop JPG (JPEG, JFIF) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. PPM is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the PPM, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JPG to PPM converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your photos are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JPG to PPM: what to expect

JPG has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is saved again. PPM is the simplest image format there is, readable by any programming language. JPG is at home in photos you need to share, upload or print; PPM is the usual choice for passing images between command-line tools. PPM cannot bring back detail that JPG compression already removed; it simply stores the result without further loss, in a larger file.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can resize the result.

PPM stores three bytes per pixel with no compression, so files are large.

JPG vs PPM

JPG

JPEG image

JPG (also written JPEG) is the format almost every camera and website uses for photographs. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, which is why it suits photos and struggles with sharp text or flat colour.

PPM image

PPM is the colour member of the Netpbm family: a short text header followed by the raw red, green and blue values of every pixel. It does no compression at all, which makes it trivial to write and read in any language and a favourite in teaching and in scripts. PNM is the collective name for PBM, PGM and PPM.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The JPG to PPM conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting JPG to PPM reduce quality?

No further quality is lost: PPM stores the decoded pixels exactly. It cannot restore what JPG compression already discarded, and the file will be larger.

Can I convert several JPG files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JPG to PPM on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JPG file, press Convert and save the PPM. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
