How to convert JPG to JXL

  1. Add your JPG photos

Drop JPG (JPEG, JFIF) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. JXL is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the JXL, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JPG to JXL converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your photos are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JPG to JXL: what to expect

JPG has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is saved again. JPEG XL gives excellent quality for its size. JPG is at home in photos you need to share, upload or print; JXL is the usual choice for high-quality photo archives.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality and resize the result.

The JXL encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to JXL and is cached afterwards.

JPG vs JXL

JPG

JPEG image

JPG (also written JPEG) is the format almost every camera and website uses for photographs. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, which is why it suits photos and struggles with sharp text or flat colour.

JPEG XL image

JPEG XL is the JPEG committee's modern successor to JPG, standardised in 2022. It compresses better than JPG at the same quality and can also store images losslessly. Software support is still limited.

Opens in Safari 17 or later and a handful of image apps; most other browsers do not display it by default

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The JPG to JXL conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting JPG to JXL reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes JXL in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.

Can I convert several JPG files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JPG to JXL on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JPG file, press Convert and save the JXL. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
