About XZ
XZ squeezes a single file with the LZMA2 algorithm, producing noticeably smaller files than gzip at the cost of more time and memory when compressing. Linux kernel sources and many distribution packages are shipped as .tar.xz.
XZ holds one file only, compresses slowly and is less widely supported than ZIP. XZ makes smaller files than gzip.
