About GZ
A .gz file is a single file squeezed with gzip. Unlike ZIP it holds exactly one file and no folder structure, which is why it is usually paired with TAR to make a .tar.gz. Web servers use the same compression for pages, and logs and database dumps are routinely gzipped.
GZ holds one file only, and Windows has long needed extra software to open it. GZ is the standard single-file compression on Linux and the web.
