About XAR
XAR is an archive format with an XML table of contents followed by compressed file data, which lets a tool read the listing without scanning the whole file. macOS uses it for flat installer packages (.pkg) and it was used for Safari extensions.
XAR opens mainly on a Mac, and Windows and Linux need extra tools. XAR is what macOS installer packages use.
