CSV carries no formatting, formulas or multiple sheets, and Excel often misreads its dates and encodings. TSV avoids the quoting problems commas cause in CSV. CSV is at home in moving tabular data between systems; TSV is the usual choice for tabular data whose values contain commas.
Only the separator changes, from commas to tabs; a field that contains a tab is quoted.
CSV is a table written as text: one row per line, values separated by commas. Every spreadsheet and database can import and export it, but it holds one sheet only and no formatting, formulas or data types.
