XLSX is awkward for scripts, databases and import tools that expect plain text. XLSB opens quickly in Excel even when the workbook is large. XLSX is at home in spreadsheets with formulas, formatting and several sheets; XLSB is the usual choice for very large workbooks that need to open quickly.
Every sheet is kept, under its own name. XLSB holds at most 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet. The workbook is written in Excel's compact binary layout, which Excel opens quickly but many other tools cannot read.
XLSX is Excel's format since Office 2007. A workbook can hold many sheets with formulas, formatting and charts. Programs and scripts usually prefer the same data as CSV or JSON.
