How to convert PBM to WebP

  1. Add your PBM images

Drop PBM files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. WebP is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the WebP, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The PBM to WebP converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your images are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

PBM to WebP: what to expect

PBM holds only black and white and few everyday apps open it. WebP is smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and keeps transparency. PBM is at home in black-and-white line art and scanned text in command-line tools; WebP is the usual choice for images on websites.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

The WebP encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to WebP and is cached afterwards. PBM holds only black and white, so the result has no greys.

PBM vs WebP

PBM

PBM image

PBM is the black-and-white member of the Netpbm family: every pixel is a single bit, either on or off, with no greys. It suits fax-like scans and bitmaps and was the format other Unix tools used to hand pictures to each other.

WebP image

WebP is Google's image format for the web. It is typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports both transparency and animation. Browsers handle it well; older editors, printers' portals and some messaging apps do not.

Opens in All current browsers; many older desktop apps and upload forms do not accept it

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The PBM to WebP conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting PBM to WebP reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes WebP in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.

Can I convert several PBM files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert PBM to WebP on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the PBM file, press Convert and save the WebP. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
