How to convert PBM to JPG

  1. Add your PBM images

Drop PBM files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. JPG is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the JPG, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The PBM to JPG converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your images are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

PBM to JPG: what to expect

PBM holds only black and white and few everyday apps open it. JPG opens on every device and is accepted by practically every upload form. PBM is at home in black-and-white line art and scanned text in command-line tools; JPG is the usual choice for photos you need to share, upload or print. JPG is lossy, so keep the PBM original if you may need full quality later.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

PBM holds only black and white, so the result has no greys.

PBM vs JPG

PBM

PBM image

PBM is the black-and-white member of the Netpbm family: every pixel is a single bit, either on or off, with no greys. It suits fax-like scans and bitmaps and was the format other Unix tools used to hand pictures to each other.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the format almost every camera and website uses for photographs. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, which is why it suits photos and struggles with sharp text or flat colour.

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The PBM to JPG conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting PBM to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise or lower the quality under Options.

Can I convert several PBM files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert PBM to JPG on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the PBM file, press Convert and save the JPG. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
