How to convert JXL to WebP

  1. Add your JXL images

Drop JXL (JPEG XL) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. WebP is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the WebP, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JXL to WebP converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your images are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JXL to WebP: what to expect

JPEG XL does not open in most browsers or apps yet. WebP is smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and keeps transparency. JXL is at home in high-quality photo archives; WebP is the usual choice for images on websites.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can set the quality, aim for a target file size and resize the result.

The WebP encoder is a WebAssembly module that downloads the first time you convert to WebP and is cached afterwards.

JXL vs WebP

JXL

JPEG XL image

JPEG XL is the JPEG committee's modern successor to JPG, standardised in 2022. It compresses better than JPG at the same quality and can also store images losslessly. Software support is still limited.

Opens in Safari 17 or later and a handful of image apps; most other browsers do not display it by default

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is Google's image format for the web. It is typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality and supports both transparency and animation. Browsers handle it well; older editors, printers' portals and some messaging apps do not.

Opens in All current browsers; many older desktop apps and upload forms do not accept it

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The JXL to WebP conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting JXL to WebP reduce quality?

A little: ToAny writes WebP in its lossy mode, so a small amount of detail is traded for a much smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can raise the quality under Options; there is no lossless setting.

Can I convert several JXL files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JXL to WebP on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JXL file, press Convert and save the WebP. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
