Choosing an audio format
Audio formats split into lossy ones built for small files (MP3, AAC, M4A, Ogg, Opus), lossless ones built for fidelity (FLAC, WavPack, Monkey's Audio) and uncompressed ones (WAV, AIFF). There are also surround-sound codecs from DVDs and home theatre (AC3, DTS), speech formats from old phones (AMR, QCP) and audiobook files. Convert to MP3 when something needs to play anywhere, to WAV when an editor or transcription tool asks for it, and keep a lossless original if you have one: converting between lossy formats always costs a little.
