About EAC3
E-AC-3, marketed as Dolby Digital Plus, is the successor to AC3. It compresses more efficiently, supports more channels and higher bitrates, and is widely used for streaming video and Blu-ray soundtracks. It is a different, incompatible bitstream, so older AC3-only hardware cannot play it.
E-AC-3 does not play in most music players or browsers. E-AC-3 is the surround format streaming boxes and newer TVs expect.
