About MP2
MP2 is the older sibling of MP3. It is less efficient but simpler and robust, which is why digital radio, digital television (DVB) and Video CDs adopted it. A .mp1 file is the even simpler Layer I.
MP2 is less efficient than MP3 and has patchy support on phones. MP2 is the audio format broadcast and DVD-authoring tools expect.
