How to convert FLAC to MP3

  1. Add your FLAC audio files

Drop FLAC files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. MP3 is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the MP3, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The FLAC to MP3 converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your audio files are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

FLAC to MP3: what to expect

FLAC is ideal for an archive and awkward everywhere else: Apple Music will not import it, many car stereos skip it and the files fill a phone quickly. MP3 trades the inaudible part of the signal for files a fraction of the size. Keep the FLAC files as your masters; you can always make new MP3s from them.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can choose the bitrate and trim the start and end.

The conversion uses your browser's own video and audio codecs (WebCodecs), with hardware acceleration where the device has it; the file is read from disk as it goes and can be up to 2 GB. Where the browser lacks a codec, the page falls back to the compatibility engine. MP3 is written at 192 kbps unless you choose another bitrate.

FLAC vs MP3

FLAC

FLAC audio

FLAC compresses audio to roughly half the size of WAV without losing anything, like a ZIP for sound. It is the standard for lossless music collections. Apple's Music app is the notable holdout.

MP3 audio

MP3 is the audio format everything plays. It shrinks audio to roughly a tenth of its uncompressed size by discarding sound most listeners cannot hear. Newer codecs are more efficient, but nothing matches its compatibility.

Questions

Are my audio files uploaded anywhere?

No. The FLAC to MP3 conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting FLAC to MP3 reduce quality?

MP3 is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can choose the bitrate under Options.

Can I convert several FLAC files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert FLAC to MP3 on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the FLAC file, press Convert and save the MP3. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Files up to 2 GB are accepted. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
