The ZIP holds the message as a page and as text, and an attachments folder with every attachment. Attachment names come from the sender, so folders, control characters and duplicates in them are cleaned up. Outlook messages are read from their compound-file structure. A message that has only a rich-text (RTF) body may come out with no text. Messages up to 100 MB are accepted.
An MSG file is one Outlook item, an email, appointment or contact, saved in Microsoft's compound file format. It keeps the message with its attachments, but the layout is proprietary, so mail programs other than Outlook cannot open it directly.
